The Imperfection of our Words

Our words never quite articulate how we feel.

The only way that we know how to convey to others how we truly feel is through the careful selection of words, and the inflections and emotions with which we deliver them. To come up with the precise words for how we feel, in a given moment, is a skill to be learned — and one where mastery is often illusive.

I try my best to extend this sort of grace whenever possible when speaking with people. So often the intent behind the words is what matters most. I know of a famous Maya Angelou quote people forget what you said but people will always remember how you make them feel. It couldn’t be more true.

So when speaking with someone, and they don’t say the exact right thing — try to extend some grace, and give them the space they need to properly articulate themselves. Or search for the feeling behind their words to truly understand them.
